Backwater is the highlight of the visit to Kerala – it is a network of brackish lagoons and canals that runs parallel to the Arabian Sea along the Malabar Coast of Kerala. It is a labyrinthine system of over 900 km of waterways, including five large, interconnected lakes and thirty eight rivers, extending virtually half the length of the state. There are thirty-four backwaters in Kerala, with twenty-seven located near or parallel to the Arabian Sea, and the remaining seven serving as inland navigation routes.
