Índia Portuguesa

Índia Portuguesa

Portuguese India holds a fascinating place in history, as the Portuguese were the first Europeans to set foot in India, with Vasco da Gama arriving in Calicut (now Kozhikode) on May 20, 1498. He secured an initial, though problematic, trading concession from the Zamorin of Calicut, leading to tension and the capture of several natives before his return. The later expeditions to India included :

Surprisingly, they were also the last to leave India, with Goa remaining under Portuguese control until 1961. Goa, Anjediva Island, along with Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman, and Diu, still bear strong Portuguese influences. Many regions, especially in the Malabar area, provide historical evidence of Portuguese presence in India. Few people realize that the major city of Bombay (now Mumbai) was once a Portuguese territory gifted to the British as part of the dowry when Charles II of England married Portuguese Princess Catherine of Braganza.
On this 22 days tour by Indian Frontiers we explores key Portuguese-influenced locations, including Chennai, Trivandrum, Kollam, Cochin, Calicut, Kannur, Kasargod, Mangalore, Goa, Mumbai, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, and Surat.
