Footsteps of Lord Buddha

Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha (meaning, ‘the awakened one’), founded Buddhism in India, which was endorsed much more in South Asia around the 6th or 5th century BCE.He was born Prince Siddhartha in Lumbini (Nepal), and after leaving his royal life, he achieved nirvana (a strong sense of freedom from human pain and suffering) at Bodh Gaya, (in India). He spent his life teaching and establishing a monastic order across the lower Indo-Gangetic Plain until his death at Kushinagar.

Lord Buddha taught a middle path between sensual pleasure and extreme asceticism, which leads to liberation from suffering. His fundamental teachings are centered on the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path. Other key concepts of Buddhism include the five Aggregates: form, sensation, perception, mental formations and awareness, which explain that all things lack independent existence and arise from other causes.

His teachings were collected orally by the Buddhist community in the Vinaya Piṭaka (monastic rules) and the Sūtra Piṭaka (speeches). Over time, Buddhism evolved into several major sects, including Theravāda, Mahāyāna, and Vajrayāna, and spread throughout Southeast and East Asia.
