Thomas Cook’s history dates back to 1841, when Baptist preacher Thomas Cook organised rail trips for temperance rallies in England. He pioneered the concept of organised travel by offering inclusive packages – covering rail, food, and lodging – effectively creating the first travel agency to make tourism accessible to the masses.
His many industry “firsts” include the invention of the package tour (1841),the first holiday brochure (1858), pre-paid hotel vouchers (1868), and the conceptualisation of Travelers Cheques (1874). In 1881, during the British Raj, Thomas Cook began operations in Bombay.
That same year, Thomas Cook introduced “Cook’s Indian Tour,” featuring 13 itineraries across India. These tours covered destinations such as Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Ajmer, Allahabad, Varanasi, Lucknow, Kanpur, Jabalpur, Ahmedabad, Surat and many more. Many of these circuits, including those that are less common today, remain documented in his original India brochures.
