British-India Architecture

With over 335 years of British presence in India, the country was once a sought-after destination for Britons seeking to live and work before returning home. During this time, the British significantly shaped the region, initially through the East India Company and later under the direct rule of the British under the monarch.

The British era can be divided into three periods: the East India Company (1612-1757), Company Rule in India (1757-1858), and the British Raj (1858-1947). This period saw the British leave a lasting impact on India’s traditional landscape and systems, with contributions to architecture, bridges, railways, judiciary, civil services, and more.

On this tour by Indian Frontiers we will examine the evolving architectural styles – from the grand designs of the rulers intending to impose their order on India and integrate their style as the native Indian design of the late nineteenth and the early twentieth century seeking greater integration. While some structures were designed by prominent British architects including, Scott, Edwin Lutyens, and Baker, many buildings were designed by lesser known architects such as Stevens, Emerson, and Shoosmith who lived in India since long and to a great extent were influenced by India and its native designs that became evident in their works.

Join us on a 13-day journey through Delhi, Calcutta (now Kolkata), Madras (now Chennai), and Bombay (now Mumbai) to explore this rich history through architecture or extend the tour by another 4 days to see the British architecture in Lucknow and Allahabad (now Prayagraj).
