Agatha Christie & India

Agatha Christie had a strong connection to India that shaped her writing, including a 1911 Mussoorie murder that inspired her debut novel, “The Mysterious Affair at Styles”, and her husband’s family links to the Indian Civil Service.
She also traveled to India in 1960, visiting cities such as Bombay (Mumbai), Aurangabad, Madras (Chennai), Delhi, and Srinagar. Agatha Christie also visited Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan on her tour to the subcontinent. Though her excursions were not generally reported at the time, adding to the mystery, and no major Christie novel is set in India, the country continues to serve as a background for numerous people and ideas, particularly those associated with the subcontinent or military leaders. Her writings include people with Indian roots, and she even employed Indian plants for poisons, drawing on Ayurvedic knowledge, cementing India’s subtle but significant part in her literary works.
One of her novels, The Mussoorie Murder, is a true unsolved poisoning case set at the Savoy Hotel in Mussoorie in 1911. One of Agatha Christie’s novels “And Then There Were None” inspired an Indian movie of 1965, “Gumnaam” created by a notable film director of his day, N.N. Sippy.

Indian Frontiers takes you on a tour through India visiting the same places that Agatha Christie visited on her trip to India in 1960. We stay in the same hotels she did. We also take you to Mussoorie, the scene for her work “The Mysterious Affair at Styles,” and we show you far more than Christie would have seen on her journey to India.
