Life at the ashram followed a disciplined routine of meditation and lectures. While the peaceful environment provided an escape from fame, each member had a different experience. Ringo Starr left after ten days due to dietary discomfort, followed later by Paul McCartney. Lennon and Harrison stayed longer, deeply engaging with the teachings.
Despite the positive start, tensions eventually developed. Rumours regarding the Maharishi’s behaviour and disagreements over finances strained the relationship. Influenced by these factors and their associate Alexis Mardas, Lennon and Harrison abruptly departed in April 1968.
The trip had lasting consequences, initially distancing the band from the Maharishi and revealing underlying differences that foreshadowed their 1970 breakup. However, the visit had a profound cultural impact, popularising Eastern spiritual practices in the West. In later years, George Harrison expressed regret over their abrupt departure, and both he and Paul McCartney eventually reconnected with meditation initiatives.
The legacy of their stay endures today. The ashram was reopened in 2015 as the Beatles Ashram, serving as a significant historical site. Their journey remains a key moment in introducing Indian philosophy and meditation to a global audience.
