North East of India

India’s North East, called the land of the seven sisters, is a region which can be best described as virgin, wild and untouched from the modernisations taking elsewhere in the world. It is a region guarded by mountains, the only passage being a narrow stretch of land some 40 km wide, called the Siliguri Corridor. Beyond this corridor lies the seven sister states of North-Eastern India, each state more beautiful than the other, each with its own cultures and beliefs, each having its own charm. Because of the regions inaccessibility from the rest of world, it has been lucky enough to maintain most of its natural diversity.

The seven states exhibit a high degree of ethnic and religious variety. Nature plays a significant role in the survival of the Northeast people, who continue to live a straightforward existence with all of the diverse tribes and cultures still adhering to the environment. The majority of the population, between 60 and 70 percent, is primarily tribal and shares many characteristics with several TibetoBurman, Mongolian, and AustroAsiatic cultures. The other major religions are Christianity and Hinduism. Without seeing these several unique tribes, a journey to the Northeast is still lacking.

This region is one of the last remaining great wildernesses in India, thanks to the subtropical climate and abundant monsoon rainfall. The forests of the Northeast are a treasure trove of biodiversity and are one of the most significant ecological hotspots in the world. The diversity of plants and animals is astounding, with hundreds of mammals, thousands of birds, and thousands of plant species listed. But the largely unexplored area still has a lot of species waiting to be found.

A passing soul is always captivated by the mighty Brahmaputra River’s majestic valleys, which transport one back in time and allow one to unwind and commune with nature rather than be weighed down by cares. It is said that the best place in the world to put your skills to the test when white water rafting is in the rapids of this huge river upstream in the Himalayan Landscape. Assam’s TeaGardens provide the area a laid-back Colonial-era allure, where all one can do is sip one of the best teas in the world and take in the surrounding scenery.
