Most Famous Ramlila of Ramnagar in Varanasi

A work of literature may be able to help describe a culture that is well-known but has existed for a very long time. On the surface of the planet, is there any play that has been performed for centuries at regular intervals? The response is unexpectedly ‘yes. ‘ The northern belt of India is home to such a fascinating drama.

People often refer to it as “Ramlila“. The performance of Ramlila has been taking place for about 500 years. It centers on the virtuous existence of Lord Rama, a well-liked Hindu deity, on Earth. His wife Sita and brothers Lakshman, Bharat, and Shatrughan are the other key figures in the story. Indeed, the related original work, known as Ramcharitmanas, is regarded as among the best pieces of Hindi literature. It was written in the 17th century AD by the well-known poet Tulsidas, who was also one of the proponents of the medieval Indian Bhakti movement.

A play or a sport is what the Hindi term ‘lila’ signifies. Ramleela is performed in other areas of the world, such as Thailand and Indonesia, in addition to the Indian subcontinent. But the most well-known iteration of it is performed in Varanasi’s Ramnagar. Once known as Kashi and subsequently as Benares, Varanasi is the oldest extant city in the world, situated in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

The distinctive stage configuration of Ramnagar’s Ramlila, which has not altered in the 200 years since the version was performed, is noteworthy. The adjustment is still carried out in front of a large audience while using burning gas and without microphones. Furthermore, it takes place across a vast region that spans almost four kilometers from Ramnagar to Lanka in Benares, unlike any other play.

This indicates that the program switches between locations throughout a large area on an episode-by-episode basis. Following the locations mentioned in the famous epic of Ramcharitmanas, these locations in Varanasi have been permanently designated for the purpose of the performance.

Many people travel from distant regions of India to the connected location in order to see Ramnagar’s Ramlila, a famous event throughout the world. The event has always considered the monarch of Varanasi to be the honored visitor since the ancient Kashi Naresh. He is the one who chooses the cast of the play every year.

The entire cast is made up of young men exclusively up to the present day. Additionally, these boys are compelled to remain in their assigned roles for nearly forty consecutive days. The event, which is often known as Sharad Purnima in India, takes place over more than a week during the festivities surrounding the Indian festival of Ganesh Chaturthi and culminates on a full moon day. The audience is given Jalebi, a delicious Indian dessert, during the performance.

Everyone in the audience also takes a pause every day at twilight to pray to Hindu deities.
India’s Ramlila begins sometime between September and October. The play typically begins in the evening. It is difficult to locate those who regularly attend the unique and somewhat lengthy Ramlila of Ramnagar. However, some people do. In this Ramlila, such folks are called “niyamis”. In the past, the ‘niyamis’ would perform a ritual dip in water every day of the event, change into fresh attire, and use sandalwood paste to draw lines on their foreheads. They are seen strolling with a lavishly adorned staff in a somewhat haughty way during the event. Everyone attending the event is then required to wear perfume, which is a bizarre tradition. Buying even a little amount of the same at the location throughout the course of the event might be an expensive endeavor. However, by offering temporary work to a large number of people throughout this whole Ramlila, the event also significantly boosts the local economy.

Currently, there are many well-liked events taking place all over the world, each with its own unique appeal. And then there are those of us who are aware that the history of humanity includes the mention of such unusual events as well. One example of this scarcity is the outstanding Ramlila that took place in Ramnagar. The drama’s energy really reflects the amazing determination of humanity.
