He is merely a guy from Dudhwa who attempted to protect wildlife to the average Indian who doesn’t know much about him. ‘Billy’ Arjan Singh is a feather in India’s cap, in reality. However, this “Indian gem” is not well understood. Let’s go beyond the man of Dudhwa and the fascinating tale of Billy Arjan Singh’s tame tigress Tara.
Indeed! The world acknowledges him as a conservationist, and he has a large fan base.
In an effort to tame a tiger, Billy began corresponding with Indira Gandhi, the prime minister at the time. However, due to the low breeding rate in the nation, there were no tiger cubs in Indian zoos at the time. After that, Billy made the decision to import the cub from another country. He received a 3-month-old female cub named Jane in 1976. Problems start to creep in even before she was brought to India and given the name Tara. The British Zoo never had any purebred Bengal tigers, and it still doesn’t. Bringing a hybrid tiger like Tara to India was challenging.
Singh was aware of all of this. He was aware that Tara possessed various genes and Siberian strains. But, Billy overcame all obstacles and obtained a veterinary certificate proving Tara to be a purebred Bengal tigress.
Billy managed to get around the bureaucracy and take her to India rather than wait for a conclusion or the whole clearance. He also had to fight all the critics in India and win widespread support for the tiger breeding program. Tiger Haven, the home of Arjan Singh, is where Tara was raised and spoiled. She was utterly free and unrestricted. She only used to go to her home base at night, when the danger from adult tigers was at its greatest. Tara has been frightening animals ever since she was a little child. When she was only 17 months old, she murdered a sambar (deer) baby. Over time, she learned the tricks of the trade when it came to foraging for food.
Billy determined that the tigress should depart for good when he started to see that she was becoming aggressive against the tourists at Tiger haven. However, this was not the only cause. Tara’s residence, Tiger Haven, became a frequent stop for two male tigers named “Long Toes” and “TM. ” Billy understood that now was the perfect moment for his princess to move on with her life and start a family.
In 1981, he witnessed Tara’s first copulation close to the river. Tara didn’t go back to the Tiger Haven until she was around 2 years old. In the beginning, it was thought that she had four litters of pups after mating with one or more tigers. Following that, Tara had a number of other offspring.
Through her feces, Billy partially kept track of his beloved Tara when he used to see her in the woods. The mud and porcupine quills were visible in the early falling. The color of the faeces she used to produce would change when she ate huge prey like buffalo. According to Singh, she would occasionally visit Tiger Haven to look for food when she was unable to capture her prey. Tara vanished from his life in 1992, according to reports, like an aging warrior.
This was only the start of the end of Billy’s daughter Tara.
