At the World Heritage site of Gahirmatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary, the 35 km-long stretch of beach is where olive ridley turtles come ashore. The Bhitarkanika mangroves and the Bay of Bengal are separated by this less well-known beach, where the unusual Oliver Ridley species breeds. What does the word “Bhitarkanika” mean? It is comprised of the two Oriya words “Bhitar,” which means “interior,” and “Kanika,” which means “something which is extraordinarily beautiful. ” The meeting of the Brahmin, Patasala, and Baitarani rivers is really amazing.

The greatest works of creation that one can imagine on the planet are this wetland of Bhitarkanika. “The Bhitarkanika National Park,” “The Garhirmatha Marine Sanctuary,” and “The Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary” are the three protected areas that make it up. The calm environment of the animals is interrupted by the chirping of birds, and people flock here to appreciate the splendor of the natural world at a distance. This area has become one of the most popular tourist spots due to its stunning scenery, mud streams, beaches, and sand.

Bhitarkanika is well-known for its rich biodiversity, which includes 115. 50 sq. kms of mangrove woodland, and it covers a total area of 650 sq. kms, with 380 sq. kms of forest cover. It is the second-biggest mangrove after the Sundarbans in West Bengal, even if it isn’t as well-known. One of the few swamps with a dense mangrove ecosystem that adds to the overall beauty of the area.

The largest Olive Ridleys breeding location, which is the breeding ground for threatened sea turtles, is the Gahirmatha Wildlife Sanctuary, another Marine Sanctuary located next to Bhitarkanika. Up to 170 species of residential and migrating birds may be found in the neighborhood of Bagagahana, which is known for its lovely chirping sounds. These birds nest, breed, and forage here.
